What are Nurse Practitioners?

Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice nurses with Master’s degrees or doctorates who provide high-quality healthcare services similar to those of a doctor. Nurse Practitioners diagnose and treat a range of health problems. They have a unique approach and stress both care and cure. Besides clinical care, Nurse Practitioners focus on health promotion, disease prevention, health education and counseling. They help patients make wise health lifestyle choices. They are truly your partners in health. (

In keeping with our regular updates, we wanted to keep you all updated as to what is happening with us here at WAFHC-Amherst and Concord.

We continue to do well. The NPs, RNs, and MAs are working tirelessly to make sure all your messages, calls, and needs are addressed. Please be patient with us. We set our goal of returning every call and every message the day we receive it but sometimes, we have to prioritize things by severity so we ask for your patience as we work to address the calls and messages.
a. We have screened 250 - 300 people since March 16, 2020 for Covid-19 in our outside tent/curbside station. We have had 16 positives with many more who we suspect are positive but are just not showing up on testing. We continue to hear this throughout the country from our nursing colleagues. Even those nurses taking care of critical patients in the hospital are seeing negative tests. Remember, there is no perfect test out there.
b. We continue to work in our outside tent daily, usually every afternoon. We love the warmer weather although we have to say, it gets very hot underneath all the gear. We give our nursing colleagues such credit for being in the PPE 8+ hours per day – we are not sure how they do it. Wendy, Katie and Ashley are generally the ones working outside. We are NOT bringing anyone into the office with any respiratory symptoms, diarrhea, or rashes. Therefore, if you do come into our office, please know that we are taking every precaution possible to protect you. Door knobs and furniture are being wiped down hourly and after every patient.
c. Quest is now open in our Amherst office. They have modified hours so plan accordingly. In general, they are open 8 am - 2 pm (They close at 12 noon on Fridays).
d. We continue to offer telehealth visits for follow-ups and acute illnesses. The NPs are skilled at history and physical examination via telehealth and have been able to make some significant diagnoses over telehealth visits. DO NOT DELAY your evaluation if you are not feeling well because you are scared to be evaluated. Remember, sooner is better than later.
e. We have changed our hours a little to give staff some time off. They have been working 5 days per week – long days and evenings. Here are our new hours. Monday, Wed, and Thursday: 8 am – 5 pm; Tuesday: 7 am – 4:00 pm; Friday: 7 am – 12 noon. We are closing on Fridays at 12 noon.
f. Remember, phones go off ½ hour before we close to allow us to answer messages.
g. If you call and do not get a “live” person to answer, leave us a message. We are checking messages every hour. We will return your call asap. Or…send a message on the portal. Providers are answering these messages all day long. Please understand, we can not diagnose and treat conditions over the patient portal but it does allow us to book a telehealth or in office visit for you, if needed.
1. Arrive 5 minutes before your appt – please stay in your car until close to your appointment time. We are minimizing people in the waiting area.
2. No other family members should come to your appointment, if possible. This is very important as we give out masks for all who people in the clinic and multiple family members decrease the supplies for other patients. Thank you – we know this is difficult but is important. Family members may wait outside – there are benches or they may stay in the car.
3. Please come in wearing a mask if you are able. If not, we will give you one.
4. Please call ahead for prescriptions, letters, notes – please do not show up without letting us know that you are coming. Reason for this – we screen everyone coming in and want to make sure that you and our staff are protected!
Last, thank you for trusting us and allowing us to be your primary care providers. We are here to meet your health care needs. We pray that you are practicing social distancing.
